A Few Good Reasons Why You Should Start Using Solar Power
The sun’s energy is the most abundant form of energy available on earth. Many people, especially preppers, homesteaders, and people living off the grid have either completely switched over or have started implementing solar power to provide electricity for their homes.
What are the advantages of solar power?
- Green energy solution: When you look at the solar energy solution, you will realize that it uses absolutely no fuel other than the sun’s light. Moreover, it does not release anything harmful into the atmosphere.
- Cheapest power solution: First, the energy comes free. Then, the installation cost is a one-time cost. Finally, the investment is recovered within a few years of installation, making the power generated by solar energy absolutely free.
- Convenience of storage: You cannot store conventional power but you can store solar power for future use. The sun’s energy comes to rescue even in the times of darkness! Storing it also ensures a 24×7 supply of power, thus saving you from any power outage.
- Low on maintenance: The solar energy systems are easy to maintain. They do not involve high costs or too much effort, thus letting you reap the benefits of the solution comfortably.
- If you want to truly live off the grid, solar power is the only way to do it
How can solar power be used?
Solar power can be used in our everyday lives by adopting the following solar power systems:
- Solar cooking system: Solar cooking is about cooking without lighting a fire or using electricity! Before you wonder, let me tell you that solar cooking is not about bland food. You can cook in more ways than one – boil, roast, or bake, cook the way you want! The only demand that solar cooking makes of you is being patient; it is a matter of more than a few minutes. However, it is not asking for too much given that you will get tasteful and healthy food without worrying about paying your gas or electricity bill.
- Solar lighting system: You can now light up the entire house, use every electrical appliance without thinking about cutting down bills. The solar lighting system lights up your house even in the nights, thanks to the power storage feature it has.
- Solar heating system: You can keep your house cozy and warm using the solar heating system without worrying about costs.
The benefits of using solar power are truly endless and you don’t have to spend every last dime you have paying some company to install it for you.
You can create your own solar power easily at home. You just need to know how.

Green? Really? As a matter of fact, it takes 3 times the amount of coal energy to produce one solar panel. A solar panel systems average life span is just 20 years. And to consider the amount of battery maintenance and added to the cost of an average 3 bedroom 2 bath home of at least $30,000, how can this be justified to add to the average 30 year mortgage?
Green, hardly! Now if you consider piece of mind being off grid, I would agree. But it’s not green energy…it has a way far larger carbon footprint than coal power…
If you are going to go solar, you need to go big, otherwise you are just fooling yourself and wasting your money. Two years ago we purchased a solar system consisting of 40 LG solar panels, 40 Tigo energy modules and an inverter that injects the solar power directly into the power grid. (no batteries) The Tigo units monitor every panel individually, keeping track of the output and efficiency. This information is displayed on a panel in my home and is sent to the Tigo Co. over the internet and every month I get a report showing the output of the system and every panel. It is also graphed per year. The advantage is that if a panel becomes defective, the Tigo Co will email you with a report and suggestions. This works, we had an instance which needed a panel replaced. Without this type of monitoring, it is possible for a bad panel to act as a load instead of a source. Defective panels have actually caused house fires. Our system provides 80 to 95 % of our electric needs. We have an all electric house. It’s true, it can take 15 t0 20 years to recoup your investment. But as electric prices increase, the number of years goes down.
